🌿 Why Grow Medicinal Herbs?
Medicinal herbs have been part of human life for thousands of years. Long before the modern pharmacy, people learned which plants could be grown, gathered and prepared for everyday wellbeing.
Today, growing medicinal herbs isn’t about rejecting modern medicine or claiming that plants can cure everything. It is about preserving knowledge, growing useful plants and allowing people to reconnect with a tradition that has accompanied humanity for generations.
Many familiar garden plants have a medicinal history. Lemon Balm has traditionally been used for relaxation and digestion, Chamomile as a calming herb, Calendula in preparations for the skin, Valerian for relaxation and sleep, and Thyme in traditional remedies for coughs and respiratory complaints.
Some are also ordinary foods. Others make teas, aromatic infusions, salves or traditional preparations. Many are beautiful garden plants in their own right and provide valuable flowers for bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
Traditional Knowledge, Not Medical Claims
When we describe a plant as medicinal, we are describing its history and traditional use. It does not mean that the plant is being offered as a medicine or that it should replace professional medical treatment.
Plants contain biologically active substances, and natural does not automatically mean harmless. Correct identification, preparation and appropriate use matter, and some herbs can interact with medicines or be unsuitable for particular people.
Our purpose is therefore to provide the plant and its story, allowing people who are interested in traditional herbs to grow and learn about them for themselves.
A Living Herbal Garden
A medicinal herb garden can be much more than a collection of remedies. It can contain plants for food, teas, fragrance, natural dyes, wildlife and traditional crafts, alongside plants historically valued by herbalists.
Growing these species also keeps old varieties and traditional knowledge alive. Instead of medicinal herbs existing merely as dried material in packets, we can once again recognise the living plants, understand how they grow and appreciate their place within the natural world.
That is the purpose of our medicinal herb range:
To grow useful plants, preserve traditional knowledge, encourage learning and put these remarkable species back into our gardens
